since my son has slept in his own room he has had a bad cough at night, our heating goes off at 10pm and starts again at 6am, his room does get reasonbly cold, but he has a duvet and a blanket on his bed and sometimes i let him sleep with his dressing gown on if its been a cold day. every night without fail hes coughing and spluttering during the night. his breathing sounds awful, and he coughs till hes nearly sick. during the day, he coughs once or twice thas bout it. my mum mentiond it could be the air in his room? any ideas? and has anyone experienced this before. my son is just 3 and half, so i dont want this to go on much longer in case hes getting poorly due to it.

Get him checked for asthma. Night time coughing is a typical symptom in young children, even if there is no wheezing.

That is exactly how my asthma started. If he is woken more than once a week by his night coughing then that is a sign of untreated asthma.
Ethel and Goodsoulette are spot on. Take their advice and also the Asthma could be allergic in origin e.g House Dust Mite hypersensitivity.
I find I struggle with different levels of moisture in the air. If I go from wet air to dry air, it triggers me off. I could be coughing all night with air that is too dry. I have a humidifier and a de-humidifier for the bedrom, I use whichover one matches the day's air humidity.
I had the same with my son from him being a 7 or 8 months old, he was ok during the day but within an hour or so of him falling asleep he was coughing so bad that he was gagging, it scared me to death!! This would happen for months at a time with no signs of stopping. I finally got an app't with a paediatrician but just so I could prove it wasn't 'just a bad cough' I filmed him on camcorder & took it with me ( a bit extreme but I got the feeling I was being seen as over reacting), they immediately gave him an inhalor which did the trick instantly! He still has the odd episode now even though he's 4 & the inhaler is the only thing that sorts him out! Good luck & it does get easier xxx
