I started taking Nitrofurantoin yesterday on 4 tablets a day) but im feeling awful. I was in bed at 9pm last night with a migraine, woke up this morning, still with thumping headache, feeling sick, and a really sore throat. i looked it up on the internet and it said that headache and sickness is a side effect, but doesnt say anythin about my throat. Maybe im just coming down with something, but proving hard to revise for my uni exams when feeling like this. Has anyone else had any unwanted effects from this medication? and I take it i carry on taking the tablets? Beki x

I can only presume that you are taking nitrofurantoin for a urinary tract infection, and you do not mention the symptoms that led to that diagnosis. The symptoms that you have at the moment would suggest a viral infection which would settle with bedrest, fluids++ and panadol.
If the urinary tract infection diagnosis is irrefutable then continue with the antibiotics, but if there is doubt, then stop the Nitrofurantoin and treat as though it is a viral problem.

Bed rest sounds good however i have exams to revise for, but finding it very difficult when feeling so bad.
Thanks for the advice though xx
Hi beki me again. just looked up side affects and it mentions headaches but also says to contact doctor. So give the NHS help line a ring and they will be able to help you more, they sometimes get a doctor to ring you back. take care. Brenda x
If it feels like your throat is swollen at all then seek medical advice asap incase it's a sign of an allergic reaction to the drug.

Let us know how you get on x
