Short term use of a wheelchair

Does anyone know how you would go about getting the short term use of a wheelchair.

My Gran is 90 and not in good health at the moment, she can't shake off a chest infection and I would like to take her for a day out but even a tiny walk leaves her out of breath at the moment.

She would refuse to buy a wheelchair as in her opinion they are for the elderley !!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL so I just wondered if there was somewhere you could hire one or just make very short term use of one.

Thanks in advance.

The Red Cross (through your local GP or health centre)

Depends where you are taking her out but some places have them for hire on premises.

Try calling her GP, they should be able to advise as well

Many places and for that matter people will lend you a wheelchair.Try the local hospital if you do not have a red cross near you.
your nearest Red Cross[ in the phone book] we did this at short notice and they were very helpful, we left 20 deposit which was given back on reciept of the wheelchair. no other cost involved, they did want to know the approx weight of the user though.
I would be very surprised if the local hospital will just hand you a wheelchair. Ask her GP for an emergency community OT (occupational therapist) referral on the grounds that your gran is now house bound, and they should be able to provide you with one quite quickily.

If you type wheelchair hire into Google lots of sites come up. It really depends whereabouts you are. For example, this place is in Manchester:

No ali(whatever)you just don't like me.The hospital should lend her a wheelchair if she has no other way of hiring one. They will even give her one if a GP confirmes that she is unable to walk and needs a wheelchair.
sorry you are talking bull. I am a nurse and work in a hospital and I know they do not just hand out chairs to the general public so go away!!
You are a woman I thought you were a man.Anyway I am training to be a doctor and they do give out wheelchairs on the NHS in my local hospital. It is just like getting glasses if you are poor they will give you one.

Thankyou

I will contact her GP and see what they can suggest.

I am taking her for a day at the Seaside, she would never be able to walk along the front hence me wanting a wheelchair, (she is only about 6 stone )

More than happy to pay for one or make a donation, its just a really short term thing as I think this chest thing is the beginning of the end for her and she loves the seaside. I just want her to experience something she loves but in comfort for her before the end of her life. Can't stand the thought of her being stuck in all the time without ever experiencing the sight of the sea again.

Thanks for all suggestions.

Aww Willspal what a lovely thoughtful person you are. Very touching.
I hope you both enjoy your day out and that the sun stays shinning :o)

Stop talking sh1t sexyrussian. I can see through your lies. I dont care if you thought I was man, woman or beast. You are a moron and I dont care what you think of me.

ps sorry willspal and good luck on your quest x Alison

Also (whatever)russian if you care to look at my answer you will see that I said they will not just hand them out, there are procedures to be followed through the GP and most likely the OT. As far as I know that still constitutes as the NHS?

I can't help with this willspal, but most of the suggestions sound worth trying. Good luck.

Anyone else apart from alijangra care to apologise for hijacking willspal's question??

Sorry willspal! I am correct though it is just ali(whatever)misunderstood me .
