I remember my hair being very long but was able to do it myself but can't remember now.

You know your mum got a load of long strings of material - then wrapped the individiual hair around that - after that I can't remember - was it wrapped up back up again and held on the head with clips. ta

When we used to have our hair done for dancing competitions it was wrapped in rags and tied in a knot.
yu roll the hair around strips of material like a hair roller and tie the two ends near the scalp

Are you wittering on about rags?

Wrap hair around said rags and tie to secure.
Rolled up then tied in a knot .Then I used to pull the damn things out in the night they were so uncomfortable and got a clip with the hairbrush :)
Eccles that's not very kind , Jenny was asking a question not 'wittering'
There's more than one way to wrap them - sorry this video is so long but you can whizz through it.

I never had it done as I am a curly top, did try ironing mine though - the smell of burnt hair haunts me.

thanks mamy - brings back so many memories - I could do them myself then and the hair always stayed in.

mind you - don't know where the material came from - probably mum's bed sheets.

when you were curling your own hair as friends of mine did at that time - they did put brown paper on the hair before putting the iron on.
Old knickers ;)
Question Author
knickers wouldn't have been long enough. maybe my uncle who was massive - may they were his knickers/drawers. Spotless of course since my aunt worked in a launderette LOL
The only used the gusset bit Jennyjoan ;)

Do you know that out of a pair 5 pairs of knickers in Sainsburys (cheap pack I have to buy because of diverticulitis- so I just throw them away.

Anyway recently I am counting 3 pairs - so I thought oh maybe you only get 3 packs - no it is happening every day shoplifters are removing 2 pairs of pants without the barcode and getting through the security guys. Ach Jaysus can you not afford a pair of cheap knickers - I was going to say knockers (typo) - now I count them when I buy them - cheap cow-wallopers LOL
Yes I used brown paper, eventually grew to love my natural curls.

Cut up knickers would do for the rolling but the long Victorian ringlets need cut up sheets or pillowslips.

I always count knickers in multipacks, happened to me once too.
