A straight conventional X-Ray or better still an MRI scan would be the answer.

OK. The Doc must be thinking of something else.
Sqad is the expert though couldn't it pick up some conditions (maybe more in a wider area than the actual hip bones) which involve things other than bones like bursitis, tissue etc... issues and disease activity in conditions like rhumatoid arthritis?
Good point made by Eve, depending upon what you were looking for, an ultrasound MAY be useful for soft tissue and bursae.
