Painful Jaw - Hypermobility

Over the past few months my jaw has been clicking a lot and one night in bed I yawned and it locked for a few seconds (very scary). The past few weeks it has become worse and is getting quite painful. It's getting to the point that i'm scared to yawn or open my mouth wide. I have hypermobility syndrome and was wondering if this could be a symptom of this or if it could be something else.

I am actually going to make a doctors appointment tomorrow but I thought I would ask on here just on the off chance.

Thanks xxx

Hypermobility Syndrome and tempero mandibular dysfunction (arthrits etc) has been well reported....see your GP who may well refer you to a facio-maxillary surgeon or he may well give you a trial of Nsaid's e.g Ibuprofen.

I have had this for more years than I care to mention, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

All my joints pop and crunch, just part of the hypermobility. It's just the jaw scares me lol. I hope it gets better 2shortplanks, i hate being scared to yawn haha x
both myself and my daughters have hyper join mobility
The cracking, according to the physiotherapist, is fluid moving through the joints
My eldest had very nasty SPD in both her pregnancies and my younger child has 'weak' ankles and has fallen from the top of the stairs twice due to them giving way. My older daughter was refused entry into the army because her knees are her bad
Neither of us have any issues with out jaws, thankfully, or it might stop us talking ;-)

Mine was not diagnosed until I was well in my 40's, but both my daughters were diagnosed young and both had physiotherapy that helped a lot.
My eldest daughter does't have any pain apart from when pregnant lol, my younger daughter has no pain but my back is getting worse by the year :(

I don't get a lot of pain with mine really. I got diagnosed with HMS when I was at high school. My knee gave way, i fell and chipped a bit bone off my kneecap. Most painful thing that's happened to me. It was in physio for that that i was told about the HMS. And they say my shoulder is an inflamed tendon so I don't think thats related to it.

The doctor was useless today :| I explained everything to him and asked if it could be related to my hypermobility syndrome, he just shook his head. He told me it would just get better. That was it! Then on the way out he asked me to show him how far I could bend my wrist back, then my elbows, knees etc. He eventually told me I had hypermobiltity syndrome :| absolutely, fecking useless!!!
My rhumatologist told me I'm hypermobile too (also inflammatory arthritis and secondary fibromyalgia). I just seem to hurt all over at the moment and am fed up of it! What is happening with your shoulder out of interest? I've had a lot of pain with mine recently, I assumed arthritis/posture related. My lower back gets very stiff and siezes up, something showed up on an XRay and my rhumo sent me for am MRI which was fine. I had a lot of problems at uni with the top of my back at uni (probably bending over books/keyboard/deli counter I worked on) but recently it's been my shoulderblade, under my right one and it's like it's got a knife stabbing it and a burning pain and feels swollen and a bit numb to the touch (save the pain!). I've tried weekly hardcore massages (feels so much better right after but just comes back but a bit of relief is better than none), painkillers, gels, changing my work chair, having typing aids...nothing seems to work. It's driving me crazy!

Not had any jaw problems, it clicks it I move it much but it doesn't bother me and isn't painful. My knees are the worst for clicking, I usually get the lift up just one floor at work as the click click click bugs me (though there is the pain and discomfort as well, I'm not that lazy :))! My upper back and neck tends to be quite crunchy too.

I trip over my own feet a lot though I have balance issues as well (menieres disease) - not a great combination - I'm a bit accident prone! So glad I did ballet and gymnastics when I was little so I have a bit more grace else I'd be all over the place! My ribs have a habit of popping out of place too though and I get swelling and pain in the bits up the front of my ribcage, touch wood, they haven't done it for a while!

Hi Jenna :) You sound a lot like my mum. When I was told about my hypermobility a lot of it lent to a lot of my mums problems as well. She has Fibromyalgia and arthritis with a lot of other things which have made her unable to work :(

Anyway, I started getting really bad pains in my shoulder last year when I passed my driving test and started driving every day. The pain is right in the joint and down the top of my arm which gets really bad at night or if I have my arms up for any amount of time (doing my hair etc.) It took me ages to get to the doctors about it and all they did was send me for an xray. They eventually concluded that there was nothing wrong with the joint and that it was just an inflamed tendon that would eventually get better. They put me on Naproxen, an anti-inflamitory, twice a day. The pain is still there though but I don't want to go back to the doctors cos they just make you feel as if you are wasting their time, especially for something that has already been "diagnosed".

It's funny that you say about tripping over your own feet cos I do that a lot too. I'm forever stubbing my toes and hitting my arms and legs off of things. I thought it was a part of the hypermobility, not feeling exactly where your limbs are placed.

I don't like the sound of ribs popping out of place! I'll touch wood for you too! haha xxx
If it's bothering you then go back, there may be something they can do.

My mum has menieres so I'm guessing that's where mine came from. She also had something in her shoulder though I think it was osteo arthritis - I remember her talking about horrible injections in it and going into hospital for an operation when I was young (with Dad cooking - he put flour in instant gravy, bless!). One of my aunts suffers with really bad arthritis too though I think it was from her having rhumatic fever when she was young.

Been in so much pain today and was so glad to get out of work and for a massage. The lady said there is a big hard lump to the left of my right shoulder blade which is the bit that hurts so getting some muscle or tendon or something inflamed as it feels really swollen as well. They put this numbing gel on which is great while it lasts :)

I'm finding it harder and harder going but I won't let it beat me. I would say find me on FB if you like and ever want to moan about evil joint stuff but no idea how you'd find me (save through other Abers on here if you have them on) as my email addresses are definitely not incognito!

I'm glad the massage helped.. I've often thought about going for one but i'm a bit funny about people touching me.. i'm a bit of a freak haha! You've probably tried them but you get ibuprofen and freeze gels from superdrug and that. They might numb it a bit if it gets really bad.

I don't have anyone from here on facebook! lol.. It's getting that i'm on here mostly anyway :) xx
