Was in Aussie (Queensland) a few years back when this happened. Absolutely deafening - very strange cos we got out of the car to investigate and the particular type of cicada was very well camoflauged so we had wrap around stereo at full volume but were hunting to track down the source.

Strange insects carmalee as they spend most of their lives underground and seem to only emerge to breed.
As you say, the sound of so many Insects must be quite deafening !
