I would like a tattoo and I have a flower design in mind but I know little about the techniques used to tattoo - I once saw a beautiful vine and flower tattoo that looked like it had no black ink used in it. Why are tattoos typically outlined in black? And what are the implications if black is not used?

I think it's just the way they are done, it makes them stand out better. There is no reason why you should have to have them outlined in black. Some tattoo artists will tell you the ink will bleed if you don't but others say this is silly. I agree that it is daft - why should black ink not bleed and others do?
hi ive got a very detailed flower design that runs from my middle toe over the top of my foot and round to my ankle bone, this is done in black but is also shaded which looks like grey, but im sure it was black ink they used, and it must have been the tecchnique they used to shade it.
not to sound big headed but it looks well smart, so if i was you i would go ahead.
as to wot doglady says im not too sure as why some say that coloured inks bleed and black doesnt, but at the end o the day the tattooists know better as to wot tattoo will look better outlined in black etc...
hope this helps.
I've got several tattoos and one is a horseshoe with a vine growing through and around it with flowers blooming off the vine. I've never seen a tat w/o black outline, but a good artist can do a very fine line so it is clearly defined but doesn't look heavy. Mine looks like a dark green unless you really inspect my hip closely and you see the outline too. Get a good artist whose work you've seen and go for it!!
