No, they aren't the same.Hazels (corylus) are shrubs and trees which have catkins & often edible nuts...several varieties & I love the one with twisted stems (contorta). Witch hazels (hamamelis) are shrubs with unusual fragrant spidery flowers between autumn & spring.
