Help with author identity

Can any one help me estabilish the identity of an author who's pen-name was John Sowerby. he wrote a book/diary about road cycling in pre WW2 britain.
the only details I have are that he was once a mental patient, and that he cycled in and around the Leatherhead, Epsom andRichmond area.
