Hell Devadolly
I have a completed grid, except for the last unchecked entry in 10d. Figured out the entry of the double clues, and a work that explains that, also the 9 extra letters in the down clues, and what that spells another work. I think I have the figure associated with secrecy, and the 5 contiguous squares, but cannot yet fathom the link between all of them!

I would have posted earlier, but have been selecting and cutting out items from the Sunday papers for my recording of the Talking Newspaper on tuesday. Plus access to Answerbank has been so slow that I was getting timed out.
I still believe that the "corner" should be stark to deter entry! I thought the recent Matt cartoon was germane to your last post on EV861, one person saying to the other, "I only became an MP to improve my living room!"
Question Author
Hello Doc - Does your salutation have an underlying meaning? What does unchecked mean as to 10d? Looks perfectly normal to me! Yes, Matt made me laugh. Have only managed 3 + 1 & 23d which now have me in a sulk. No, I am not going to be deterred from having a comfortable DC for those of us who need our brains pampering, you will notice it is those of us who always seem to be doing the EV whilst 'on the run' without time to concentrate...............anyway, it is all fitted out and the wine is in the fridge, the Westminster finance office was very accommodating, do join us!
Yes, it is painful today isn't it - do you know why it periodically has a paddy like this?
Hello all! Mini PG has not yet ventured back into the water, Devadolly.. I have a grand total of 4 clues solved so far, and WILL go to the corner if I choose to. So there. DocHH, you are too clever for me. I fancy a nice hot-pot-type dish for corner fare this evening - some nice shin with mushrooms, perhaps? And some dumplings on top...mmm.....
Hello Devadolly
You could read it that way. But to be more specific, there are 4 clues that indicate entry as (4,4), any other clue with more than one word just says (2 words), i.e. no indication of length of either word. That was my first thought on "double clues", turned out to be correct. The 2 words are not entered in a straightforward manner.
Then there are 4 clues which indicate a solution longer than can be entered into the grid, eg 1d. These are resolved in accordance with the extra letters in 9 ot the down clues.
Am out and about from monday afternoon, and home wednesday evening, so please accept AOL until thursday morning!
Let's hope copelander enjoyed the foray into the Metropolis. Physicsgirl might have got flippers for minipg!
Ciao
Question Author
Thanks Doc, will mull (he!he! back to the corner again) over your hints, have a good time.
Physicsgirl, hope you saw my last post, massive provision been made for minipg. Yes, we will go in there if we want - well said! I have got an excellent joint of brisket we could put in the slow-cooker, but I had thought of 'putting an expense slip in' for a Bar-b-que - stainless steel, gas-fired job of course, and digging out some lamb chops or 95% meat burgers for the party, what do you think?
ooo, or some slow-bbq pork belly.....
mini PG very delighted by the idea of a pool to call her own - she loves splashing in the bath now. If we go for the burgers, can we put blue cheese in the middle?

No further progress on EV, but have colour-coded some grid space which makes me feel I'm achieving something. That's what I tell myself, anyway. Must go, bed and bath routine awaits.
Where is Novalis, and I thought Copelander would be EVing despite trip. to London.
hello all EV N&Cers. Back fom Londontown last night. Good meeting, lovely eating and a modicum of retail therapy. Didn't make it to Maggie Jones, sorry DocHH. Did the speccie crossword on the way over on the plane, and was amazed to find my name amongst the runners up again! Today's not yet complete. I've got the double clues, the treated ones and the extra letters, but can't get a grip on the 4 unclued, nor the5 contiguous squares. Oh well another bit of staring at an almost completed grid (including 10d, DocHH )
I have got one stage further.

To get the 4 unclued words you do need the theme, which is a name of a person whose 100th birthday would be this coming week if the person was still with us.

I have a completed grid, but I have not finally found the 5 squares that have to be highlighted. I do have a candidate but I don't like it much, so I am looking for something better.
Question Author
Thanks Rollo, that was a massively helpful hint which I will pursue fifthwith!
Copelander, this is getting a bit unfair, 3 prizes in a month! Do you deliver it by hand? Must admit I like the Speccie and have managed about 3/4 of it though I am having a bit of trouble with the theme (so what is new),
Can't do pork Physicsgirl, we only do home-grown beef & lamb. No, let's have the cheese with some Bath Olivers afterwards.
Hello all
Gosh, I reckon DC will be crowded this week. Perhaps we could apply for a grant for a second home. Where should it be located? Not tooooo far from our places of work. All suggestions considered. Have placed all of 8 entries after an hour's toil. Do I get the impression that Hypnos has a liking for the Scots native tongue?
Devadolly - I love the sound of cheese - will contribute a bottle of port to complement it.
Question Author
Rollo - I have searched with vigour and all I can come up with is a 'lovey' who was considered for but didn't become a person with a special licence --------anywhere near? If I am, would the unclued bits be the said 'lovey' and the said gun toter? Otherwise lost...................!

Ringer, welcome to the DC - you may be called upon to aid in our repelling bporders from those jealous clever clogsis boys who don't have need of a DC. Thank you for the offer of the port, lovely! Just a thought as it is summer, what does everyone (in DC) think about a white, perhaps Christina would recommend?
Where are Doc & Novalis, they can come too, but NOT until they have brought the full set of crystal glasses back, also NO grumbling about our comforts!
Hello Everyone, I'm still here, but have been at Talking Newspaper Committee meeting today, and am recording tomorrow, all the amusing extracts from the Sunday Telegraph and Sunday Express, Then off to the frozen North, aka Birmingham for some work.
Ringer, Physicsgirl and Devadolly, you really need to work those clues, and sorry, but to me it really seems to be far too comfortable in the DC!! Hopefully might see you on thursday, looking forward to the Speccie.
Congrats, copelanber, just keep Maggie Jones filed for next time.
Will however echo the question, where is Novalis.
Asta whenever!
Thanks folks, but after that successful run, it'll probably be aout 3 years before another prize comes along! meanwhile , this week, I'm making arrangements to move into DC (if you'll have me, Devadolly and PG, I'll bring some \Chablis, or what about a jug of Pimms...or both if it's going to be a long stay ) I just can't think who this VERY secretive person can be or what the theme might be.
Welcome to DC Copelander.
It's probably no consolation but I have got the "secretive person" thanks mainly to an earlier hint and the extra letters in the down clues but can't for the life of me see what the secret is or how to fill the rest of the grid.
Looking forward to the Pimms, especially if the weather stays fine
Ringer, I expect that was Rollo's hint that helped. Well done.My googling bar is nearly worn out,but no light dawns. But the DC is far more comfortable than I ever thought it would be.....what with all the drinks and nibbles,I could settle down here for a while.
A few weeks ago I said I would endeavour to get some guidelines as to what is, or is not, acceptable with regard to the submission of Telegraph Group Prize Puzzles.

Phil McNeill, the Puzzles Edtor, has answered those questions and you can read what he has to say here.
Hey N&Cers,

Greetings from Boston. My initial impression of this week - no time for the EV - has proven correct, but all of daughter's belongings have been successfuly boxed & sorted into St Louis, Boston and NYC piles. Today is travel day.

DocHH, you will be pleased to know that I related your tale of woe regarding Chinatown, parking and the airport to my Boston hosts, and he laughed and then said "Yeah, that happened to me once too." She agreed that Chinatown was hard to figure out. So you can feel good about the fact that you can navigate Chinatown just as well as the Boston natives can.

Well, a pile of chores await back in old St. Lou but hopefully the deck will be clear for the new Spec. on Thursday. From the comments it sounds like this was a good EV to avoid!

Question Author
Oh yes, welcome all to the DC, I see absolutely no reason why we can't brainstorm (or as I feel at the moment brain-shower) in comfort. Sorry Doc, completely outnumbered!
Pimms would be lovely Copelander.
I don't feel so bad this week as so many of you are having such difficulty with the theme - more hints needed please.
Thanks for the info Big Dave.
About to throw in the towel on this one. Please can someone tell me whether 24a is PERUKES and 21a TAVERN? If so, it leaves me stuck for 19d.

It is, however, pleasant in the corner. Lovely Pimms.
