How to identify date an old book was published

I have a few books that I am interested in identifying their age. I know it is something to do with a row of numbers, although some of the books dont even have that. Anybody know the best way to identify the dates?

The row of numbers - from 10 downwards - relates (if I remeber correctly) to the printing. For the second printing, the "1" is deleted; for the third printing the "2" is deleted, and so on. They assume that if a book runs to ten printings a new edition is needed

I know it sounds silly, but I thought all books state "first published in..., this copy...." The numbers at the bottom just tell you which issue it is.
