Can anyone remember a poem about a shepherd whose dog had just been put to sleep by the vet, and he was reminiscing about the years when they'd worked together in the hills?
Sounds sad, doesn't it, and it's driving me mad trying to remember it.

Elvis Presley (among others) once recorded a
song called 'Old Shep', which certainly has this
theme. The first verse was:
'When I was a lad and old Shep was a pup,
Through the hills and meadows we'd stray'
Just a boy and his dog, we were both full of fun,
We grew up together that way'

Is this what you were seeking ? If so, I know the rest
of the lyrics. Just ask.

Scylax, thanks for the answer, but that's not the one. I've only ever seem mine written down, not as a song. I'll just have to keep trying. Thanks again.
Wasn't 'Poor Old Rover...his hunting days are over....' was it? My Dad recites this after a few beers.......let me know if it rings a bell....he's knows it word for word!!!
