Hve read Far from the madding crowd, The mayor of Casterbridge and watched Tess on video.....am wondering if it varies much from the novel....enough to merit a reading...

Definitely. I read the novel at the same time as watching the fine BBC adaption and it actually enhanced the enjoyment. Hardy (or any novelist) via filmakers is usually so diferent you wonder if it's the same story. It's so beautiful it's worth a read just for the evocative writing.
