By the sounds of it, I had something very similar. It was caused because the plumbing was all wrong in the bathroom (the next room). So the water had got into the bricks and was settling in the next room, it gradually cleared up. Clean in with bleach ASAP, try using a dehumidifier, and see about putting some damp proof paint on the area. (Its like PVA glue)
i had the same problem. It turned out to be damp. You can get damp proofer that you paint over it and it stops it but it does smell really fishy and don't go for a day or two.
Black mold removal is to clean the area as much as possible using soap and water to remove as much of the mold as you can. Then disinfect the area with a bleach and water solution, leave for a few minutes (usually about 15 minutes) and then rinse thoroughly and dry rapidly.
