My son has been employed on a part time basis (sat/sun) since May last year and has not got a contract of employment. He has been paid weekly (a week in hand) since then until just after xmas. The management then said they were changing all staff salaries to monthly payment paid straight into the bank. There was obviously a change over period here and staff didn't get paid for 5-6 weeks. He has now received a payslip showing the amount paid into his account, but my question is, is it normal practice for casual staff to be paid monthly especially when they are students.

I would have thought it quite common - if a company operates a monthly payroll system then all staff will be paid through it, casual or not.
I'm afraid so - usually, people who work casual hours eg week to week are paid weekly e.g. for catering companies covering events. However, they may be paid monthly if they work for example for a local authority run establishment.

A contract can be verbal or written, but I would advise you son to push to receive a written contact of employment.

Does your son's payslip include holiday pay (it should be paid weekly pro rata if he is casual)? This will be worth checking as it would otherwise be stated in his contract of employment.

Whether employees are students is irrelevant. All employees will be paid under the same rules.
