What are the flaming trees from which the Eagles rescue Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf and the dwarves in The Hobbit, and how do they provide them with temporary weapons.

I think they are pine trees but don't quote me on that.
Anyway, they are on fire and they throw flaming pinecones at the wargs.
