Are the rumours true that this wonderful book will or is being made into a film?? Also, I have heard rumours that a perfume co. is producing perfume inspired by the book???

Fantastic book but not sure about a film. It's quite an odd story. Have you read it?
Question Author
I wouldn't say 'read it' more 'devoured it'. Most remarkable book I have ever read - not to say the best - but it's up there - hope I'm not sounding 'ghoulish' because as you say - it's a very odd book but wonder how it would transfer to the screen???
Film release date in UK 8th Dec 2006

Thank you kempie
Cheshamgirl - Exactly its a bit perverse. Although it's probably one of the best books I've ever read.
"Le Parfum" is the limited edition set of fragrances produced by Thierry Mugler.

spanner7853 - just so, it is perverse, but curiously satisfying at the same time - he's almost an anti-hero. In some ways reminds me of the book 'The Collector' by John Fowles - fantastic, really enjoyed. I remember seeing the film (with Terence Stamp) when I was very little (probably 5 or 6ish - where were the parents!!!) and sensing the strangeness - understanding but not understanding because I was too young - it's the same with Perfume.
Question Author
Merci beaucoup kempie - definately on my Christmas list!
It IS a superb book - and one of the best in translation I've ever read. Translations often sound like, well, like they've been translated, but this one was done with extraordinary care and skill. Had no idea about the film - will be intrigued to see who's playing Grenouille...
Question Author
Ben Wishaw is playing Grenouille
Question Author
sorry Ben Whishaw - not unlike a young Terence Stamp - has the same brooding, disturbing qualities
Whats the collector about I amy have to add that to my already vast library of books.
So come one - give us a quick idea of the plot/storyline, I've not read but it sounds interesting....
Question Author
Briefly, very briefly - about a young man (Frederick) who kidnaps a young girl who he admires from afar - keeps her imprisoned - rather like a butterfly (which again he collects). It's rather soul destroying, beautifully captured and 'stays' with the years.
Question Author
It made a huge impact on me - probably not to everybody's taste - but like 'Perfume' - it conjures up so many images - not always beautiful but they impress
a bit like silence of the lambs then by the sounds of it. I'll have a look out for it.
Question Author
NO NO NO - not like Silence of the Lambs - sorry - a good book in it's own right - but forgive me - not art or great literature - this is the sort of book that 'stays' with you - like some of the early Ian McEwan - 'First Love Last Rites' - it disturbs - but also perversely satisfies - it's not to everybody's taste - but it challenges.
Think I'll give it a try, thanks : )
Question Author
Tell me what you think when you finish it
Makemesmile - the plot given is of The Collector not Perfume (just in case there's any confusion!).
