spelt
their / there
its / it's
Mister Meaner (my fave from the AB site)
complement / compliment
accommodation
where / wear
bier / beer

Just a few - you'll notice that many of the above sound the same, so put the spelling test (say 10 different words) into a piece of prose and ask people to circle the mistakes and suggest the correct word/spelling.
also, when people abbreviate unitl to till
till is a verb meaning something to do with ploughing, or a cash register or glacial sediment - there maybe others.
The only acceptable shortening of until is 'til
loose/lose
their/there/they're
desert/dessert
Two of the commonest are:

supersede (most people put supercede)

and desiccated ( most put dessicated).

if you are needing a lot of commonly mis spelled words, look on "word" (if you have it) at the auto correction suggestions!
UglyBob - afraid you're wrong. The first meaning of till in Chambers (and most dictionaries) is "up to the time of".
Here are 30, though if you use them all it might been a little mean.

Accommodate, embarrass, grammar, forty, separate, business, harass, necessary, privilege, all right, existence, occurrence, calendar, government, perseverance, commitment, height, rhythm, committee, immediately, seize, conscientious, indispensable, transferred, description, maintenance, minuscule, millennium, supersede
nessacary (don't even think that's right) necassary?
Paraffin
Lackadaisical
Innuendo
Rhododendron
Refrigerator
necessary
good way of remembering necessary= i have one Collar and two Sleeves (one c and two s's)
tomorrow...many people put tommorow
definite
Try just this one sentence. I've never met anyone who got it all correct the first time:-
"Outside a cemetery, sat a harassed cobbler and an embarrassed oculist, picnicking on a desiccated apple and gazing at the symmetry of a ladys ankle with unparalleled ecstasy. "
The classic is someone who is concentrating so hard on the spelling that they slip and write "ladies' "
Even Microsoft Word doesn't like the use of
"embarrassed" !!!
banananana.........i find it really difficult to stop spelling that word.... please help me.
I've set plenty of quiz questions over the years. I find that the words which cause the most confusion are often the simplest ones, like 'skilful'. (I guarantee that most people will add an extra letter or two!).

Chris
Liaise.

'definitely' seems to be the one most often wrong on AB (so often seen as definately). 'Most often confused' is perhaps a slightly different matter (complement/compliment etc). And most common typo is another one again: teh, adn etc
