When I was 12 I was into those Armada Ghost story books, I've had a look on Amazon on they're still available on there.
Try the Arthur Ransome books for a bit of adventure and messing about. I loved them but they may be somewhat dated these days.
It very much depends on what sort of person she is and how old she is, as well her approximate reading level. Do you think she'd like fantasy, humour, romance, graphic novels, crime, thriller, supernatural? If you could give a little more information then I could maybe come up with a few ideas.
Try Watership down, Mrs Frisbee and the rats of Nimh, The Hobbit.
If she likes sci-fi try the current range of Doctor Who novels. They are aimed for children of her age but enjoyed by adults also.:-D
I enjoyed reading Babysitter Club books, written by Ann Martin. Also, I loved the Goosebumps series of books by R.L Stine. They are a great way to an introduction into scarier books. Or why not go back to the old classics of Enid Blyton books, such as the Secret Seven series.
When I was 12, I used to read point horror books or the Sweet Valley twins book series. Not exactly quality stuff but very addictive (at least at that age :) )
my 12yr old loves the goosebump stories by r l stein. also the adrian mole books i read when i was younger!
'feeling sorry for celia' by jaclyn moriarty is a good read for younger teens, as is 'finding cassie crazy' by the same author.

I used to like the Point Horror series too. Roald Dahl was a big favourite of mine when i was growing up also. Also loved Carrie's War, The Peppermint Pig, The Robbers (all by Nina Bawden). Fabulous.

For more recent books my nice and nephew love the books of Eoin Colfer (Artemis Fowl series)

* sorry that should've read 'niece'.

celia rees i find is a very good authour her book witch child i read at about that age and it was a really good story id reccomend that for her

Judy Blume books are very good for early teen girls, especially "Are you there God, it's me Margaret", and "Fusgeamania", also Point Horror, the Babysitter's Club,

I also used to love the Enid Blyton stories about the Malaory Twins and all those jolly hockey sticks bording school midnight feast type ones that Ms Blyton wrote!
