Morning. My friend has been on at me for ages to read this book and from what I can make out there is quite a cult following for it. For some reason I just can't get started with it. Is it worth trying?

I think it is one of the most unusual and memorable books that I have ever read; however it is not an easy read. Perhaps you should leave it for a while and try again sometime; it is the type of book that you need to be feeling receptive to, otherwise you can't enjoy it.

John Kennedy Toole killed himself before this book was published (there are many theories why); it later won the Pulitzer Prize. Yes, read the book sometime, I don't think you'll regret it.

Thanks for that. I'd read all the background but sometimes you look at a book and just don't want to pick it up! I am glad to say I started to read it in the bath last night and am thoroughly enjoying it. Shame it took so long for me to pick it up.
I read this when it first came out in this country and have never forgaotten it. Toole may have been an out and out wacko, but his fiction had a real grip on me from the start. My copy is really battered now. Enjoy it!
