I have World History Encylopedia published by Paragon. It is for kids. Color illustrations on each page. Time lines and nice and big for the kids to pour over. 4 million years ago to the present day. Great as a reference or even just to browse thru .....never ever dull.
Do you mean world history, British history or English ( or Scottish, etc) history?
Dorling Kindersely books are normally very good with lots of pics too

sorry I cannot be more specific - it is a present for a child who I know likes history books, but if I ask his mum about what he would like, she is bound to tell me not to go to any trouble, that's why I did not know where to start from. English History would probably be a good bet. I will have a look at the DK website. Thank you for the replies.
I bought a DK book titled World history for children and it is fab....lots and lots of ...great illustrations and find myself looking thru it ....at 6 years old i would focus on the illustrations and compare them with what we wear and eat and do and have today.....no running water, no supermarkets, no electicity etc...and ask how he/she would get on in such conditions.....have fun!
