Has anyone read Dune (by Frank Herbert)?

What's it like in comparison to, say Asimov or Arthur C Clarke?

I found it quite slow, but some of the premises on which its is based are interesting. Really annoying that the film and the game got the eye thing wrong. In the book, spice addicted people have no whites to their eyes, their eye whites are blue, not necessarily the irises. Still what can you expect from an industry that uses a clear instead of a green stone for the gift of Arwen to Aragorn!!

Dune is my favourite book ever!! It took me 3 attempts to get into it but I've now read it dozens of times.
I love Arthur C. Clarke (he has never let me down yet) I also like Asimov, I would say that Dune is maybe a little harder going (the first time you read it) but definately worth sticking with.  Have you read it yet or are you planning to?

It's something i'm thinking of reading. I've not seen the film, or at least, i've only clips. So i'll be starting from afresh. I've been reading the Foundation series by Asimov recently, befroe that the latest offering from Kevin J Anderson in the Saga of Seven Suns. I've also read the Rama series by Arthur C Clarke. All excellent, but different in their own way.

Just a suggestion but - Please don't watch the film, before or after reading the book, it truely is dire!!!!

I really liked 'Dune'.  It was a riveting read, and there wasn't anything in it that annoyed me for being too obviously 'unscientific' (in a sci-fi sense).  I am a huge Asimof and Clarke fan.  My first Asimov was 'Nemesis' - on holiday in Cyprus in 1988.  God knows my first 'Clarke'.  I haven't read any of the 'Dune' sequels, so no comment - film was OK, but only OK.

A lot less "scientific" than Asimov or Clarke, both of whom I find a bit "dry". Personally, I loved the first "Dune" book, though gave up on the series after reading God Awful (Emperor) of Dune. Friends tell me the series makes a recovery in later volumes, though.

Never read much of Arthur C Clarke so can't comment. Dune was fairly enjoyable though again I found the pace a bit slow compared to Asimovs riveting reads.
