Yes, indeed Em, great stuff. It’s a book I can pick up and open at any page – and just read.

Similarly with Jane Eyre. No sex – but what passion!

//Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little, I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong!--I have as much soul as you,--and full as much heart! . . . I am not talking to you now through the...

Well I would have difficulty choosing between Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens or Katherine by Anya Seton.

Although I think Katherine probably just tips it.
Narnia books!

<bashes head against desk>
The Skallagrig by William Horwood.
Not yet decided on female author.
Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks
male herman melville moby dick / dickens great expectations? toss up
female morgan llewellyn bard
A Prayer for Owen Meaney (John Irving), Lord of the Rings, We Need to Talk about Kevin. Also loved Pat Barker's "Regeneration" trilogy (about WW1, better than Birdsong I felt)
Barmaid. Absolutely loved Katherine by Anya Seton. On my book list when taking A level history. Mediaeval History, very few schools offered that syllabus.
I'll try Regeneration, bensmum.
They're worth reading especially if you like that period of history Tilly. I saw Testament of Youth mentioned earlier, that's another great book
Chaptazbry, have you read 'Woman In The Fifth' By Douglas Kennedy? it's good.. (film not so good though)

My next book I've got here to read is 'A Special Relationship' by ^^ him.

As for Martina Cole - I've read a few of hers, but they do seem to be much the same.
'The Know' was the first and thought it was great.

One of my best books ever was 'The Time Travellers Wife'.... what a wonderful read... (was a little disappointed with the film though)
A walk in the woods and Down under by Bill Bryson.

Dave.
Here Be Dragons by Sharon Penman

The Ascent of Rumdoodle by W E Bowman
To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, great tragedy this is all she wrote.
The Outsider by Albert Camus, opening 2 sentences - Mother died today. Or maybe yesterday, I don't know.
Am I allowed two :)
A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini and My Son my Son (originally entitled O Absalom ) by Howard Spring .
The only two books that have ever made me cry .

By female authors ..Little Women by Louisa M Alcott and South Riding by Winifred Holtby .
The girl who loved Tom Gordon - Stephen King, love it!
...and anything by Jennifer Worth
Ohhhh ... Little Women ... I'd forgotten that.
Too many to choose, it depends on my mood but for male author Terry Pratchett and for female author Dorothy Sayers
Mister God, This Is Anna. by fynn
Lots of great opinions here which have inspired me to read more. In an early reply DTcrosswordfan mentioned The Glass Bead Game by Herman Hesse, the most difficult book I've ever read, and yet to understand. I'll give it another go DT!
