A clock? I thought that it was a 'clockwork horse':

Well, here's the clock but the only possible literary reference I can find is mention of ‘Godiva Rides Again in a New Coventry’, by J. Hewitt, published in the Belfast Telegraph on 20 September 1957. However it doesn't seem to be online.
