5 - double quotation and if you have an example inside, say, a conversation, then that should be single quotations. The Americans are different on this....hence the confusion

6. Also, I thought that the same principle applied for the brackets....I may be wrong on that one, ( xx) first up, then [yyy(xxx)yyyy] fort second

Question 5 again:

Which ones are correct??

A - It was 'Jurassic Park;'

B - It was 'Jurassic Park:'

C - It was "Jurassic Park";

D - It was "Jurassic Park":

And another question, when staring of with re: is it 're' or 'Re'?
None of them is correct, IMO, as they all include a punctuation mark within the (single or double) quotes.

> And another question, when staring of with re: is it 're' or 'Re'?

If by "staring of" you mean "starting off" as in beginning a sentence, then it's "Re".
it depends what is coming after jurassic park!
Extinction and Suspension, me fears.

So what should I do if I'm talking about movies, and I'm using quotation marks in a sentence or paragraph, then I need to use a : or a ;??

Thanks. ;-)
Question 2. They can and should have capital letters if the genres are defined terms within the document you are creating.
the decision between whether to use : or; is made depending on what comes after it
Milvus, no more so than any other word used as a heading.

Would you really say that e.g. Jimi Hendrix was a Rock guitarist or Miles Davis a Jazz musician...?
LL I think you'll need to give a real example. The decision whether to use single or double quotation marks will almost certainly have no bearing on the decision to use a colon or a semi-colon.

It was 'Jurassic Park;' in 2011, 'Avatar' is.

OR

It was 'Jurassic Park'; in 2011, 'Avatar' is.
Well, as neither of those makes any grammatical sense, pick whichever one you like!
I don't understand some of these, A & B look the same to me in questions 1 and 5...
but the "Jurassic Park" examples should have the semicolons outside the inverted commas, not inside.
Ah - ignore the above, I have just spotted the punctuation in each line is different. Both wrong, the punctuation should still be outside.
Question Author
Sorry, but I'm not too good at explaining things. I'll try again.

When naming films, albums, track tiltles, books or whatever, I always use quotations; for example:

The biggest film of all time is 'Avatar'; in 1993, it was 'Jurassic Park.'

Or the I use those use the quotation marks outside of 'Avatar', as follows...

The biggest film of all time is 'Avatar;' in 1993, it was 'Jurassic Park.'
Question Author
Or do I, rather. Sorry.
You should write it thus:

The biggest film of all time is 'Avatar'; in 1993, it was 'Jurassic Park'.
(Single or double quotation marks will do, but the semi-colon and full stop must be outside the QMs.)
