Printable Iron-On Transfers

Has anyone tried this ?
I've just tried using 'normal' (HP) transfer meant for light fabric on a fabric that is actually somewhere in the middle and it looks dreadful.
Can anyone recommend a brand of transfer material that works well on darker fabric (I'm planning to iron over the mess I've made with the new stuff).
I assume transfers for dark fabric have a white opaque substrate (?)
