Anyone recognise this?

I'm trying to remember the title of a series of books -- a sort of sci-fi/adventure I read as a child. There was a group of humans, a robot-thing (going by the name of AMOS, I think) and some bear-like alien creatures that were taking over and killing/enslaving the population...

I'm really hoping I'm not the only person to have stumbled upon these books as a pre-teen :-\

Was it anything to do with children being taken away at 14 or so and 'capped' - they'd come back with a sort of cap wired into their heads, hidden under their hair?
