Can this be done? So if another new poster appears who seems to have the same IP address as another, it wont get registered.
(In order to tackle "trolls").

Wow I bet nobody thought of that before!

:-) thanks, I hoped it would be a good idea.
as I understand it, this won't detect people using public computers. Also, I gather you often get a new IP address every time you switch on; so it may not pick up trolls using computers at home in their caves either.
What if there is more than one user in a household? There are 3 of us registered to this site in my house.

And there are any number of products available which will spoof your true IP address...
A Public Library will have hundreds of users all on same IP....big problem for Editorial Team !
jno's advice is correct.
Anyone using (say) a PC in a Net Cafe will not be able to be blocked, and even if were to be blocked,it would bar all AB users from that cafe.
More to the point the "tail" of an ISP address changes every time a person logs on.
AN ISP address consists of 3 parts:~
1.The ISP companies own address part,
2. Your area address (for your country & county) part,
3.Your own personal part.
For instance mine would read (as numbers) BT Broadband~UK East Sussex~Then my (changeable) tail number.
Whilst the first 2 parts always stay the same, every time you log on the "tail" changes it's numbers.
This is done by your ISP to block anybody hacking into your PC.
I am a moderator (one of several) at another forum, and this information was given to us by a BY Broadband Technical guy when we were trying to block some abusive posters there.
It might be more usefult yo bring back(as we had on old AB) the green "newbie" names,at least that way when a new name appears it would be obvious what they were?

EKnewsDS,
I don't think you would like it.
It's a forum for people with serious depression.
I help out on it,prompted to join by a previous AB member called In A Pickle, who as many people here will know has serious depression.

I'm not a troll news....My son has a name similar to mine and has only asked homework questions.

I haven't a clue what my daughters name is.

My BF would log onto my account if he wanted to ask a question.
I obviously know my daughters real name....
That's reassuring Ummmm, rofl ;-)
Would be a shame if you had a static IP address though Mr V :)
I don't really understand IP addresses. I joined this site yonks ago and then moved house. So wouldn't mine be different now?
Mr V was speaking for about 95% of people, which I agree with. Some people like myself have static IP addresses for certain things, usually mail services, internet network, IRC networks - things that require a static IP address. Because I have a virtual CCTV server I'm required to have a static IP address. Not only that because of what I do in my spare time I never actually log off and it is very rare that I ever get disconnected, usually once every 3-4weeks. So you have nothing to worry about ummmm :)

How are ya btw?
Chances are your IP address is dynamic, usually you have to pay extra for a static one. So yes everytime you disconnect, or get disconnect it will change everytime :)
Things are all good :-) I have no complaints....

Well maybe one complaint....I'm counting my bruises :-(
