Can there be instructions somewhere of how to make text in questions and answers bold, italic, underlined etc as I don't know how!

At the risk of sounding thick can someone please explain to me how I use the italicise bold and underline texts ? Do I type the word in first or what ?

Not quite as thick as I thought I've just worked it out didn' realise it didn't show until I previewed message !!!!
