Those buttons only provide shortcuts to your programs. If you don't want one of them, simply right-click on it and select 'Delete'. That will remove the shortcut but you'll still be able to access the program from the Start menu.

Chris
right click on the clock and select customize notifacations then select the icon you want to hide and select always hide in the pull down menu next to it.

But that means you wont be able to use the icon unless you go throw the reverse procedure.

Much easier to set MSN not to run at startup so the icon isn't there at all, then you run simply it when you want it and exit it when your finished with it.
LOL,

if you mean the ones on the left hand side then follow chris's answer, for the ones on the right hand side follow mine :0)

You can also auto hide the whole taskbar if that gives you a better chioice for what you want , right click on an empty space in the task bar select properties & tick the box " auto hide the taskbar ". the task bar & its contents will now only be visible when you hover the mouse over its location.
I think (from memery as I don't have messenger here at work!)

click on the options button (far right icon just above your contacts) then select the Tools menu and then click Options. Click the General tab, and then clear the automatically run messenger when I logon check box.
