All my music seems to have been wiped from my iPod but all the 10GB still shows under the 'other' category

When I connected my iPod touch to my new laptop all my music and videos disappeared. I assumed that it must not have recognised the iPod as I had never connected it to the laptop before, but when I looked at the specs what would usually say 8gb music, 3gb videos, says 11gb in orange, or 'other'. This leasds me to believe that perhaps all my music is still stored, but not accesible?
Also, after syncing some of my albums back onto it, I noticed I am soonm running out of space..
I am not sure if it was wiped before connecting either. If anyone might know what has happened then I would appreciate and answer. Thanks
