You just do it in "my profile" and enter it twice and then click on the button that says 'Submit'.
I did it just before Christmas and I now get notifications of answers to my posts delivered to my new email address. So, yes, it works.
The only downside to it was that my avatar disappeared from the Beta version of the site.
