Paying In A Cheque

I've just found out how to pay in a cheque at an ATM by watching it on YouTube, but it didn't say if you have to sign the cheque on the back.
Last time I paid a cheque in was at my Santander bank but that is closed now and this is the first cheque I've received since then.
Presume I have to pay it into their ATM, but do I need to sign it or anything else? TIA

You can also pay cheques to bank accounts via any PO. Pick up a paying-in envelope there.

Yes, we pay ours in to a local PO, but they do take a lot longer.

Can you talk me through paying into a Post Office please.
1/ Do I need to sign the cheque on the back or put my account number on it?
2/ Do I need to fill in a paying in slip?
3/ When I ask for an envelope at the P.O do I have to pay for it or pay for a stamp for it?
4/ Do I then post it in the letterbox or hand it to the clerk? Thanks.

I think you can only pay cheques into Santander at THEIR machines at their bank locations. (and they don't do smartphone photo deposits like some banks).
I have sent one or two cheques by post - takes 2 or 3 days & costs the price of postage.

If the cheque is made out to you I see no need to sign it.

at the post office they have special envelopes just tell them you are paying a cheque in, you give them your cheque. The bank details of the account number etc are put on the front of the envelope in spaces provided. You need your bank card (not your paying in book). They seal the envelope, stamp it like your bank does and give you a receipt and they keep the envelope to post it on for you. (best i canremember).

Does Santander not have a mobile app which allows you to pay in a cheque? My bank does. Basically, you use your mobile to take a picture of the front and back of the cheque and it's done.

So I ask for an envelope and I put my account number on the front of it, put the cheque inside, seal it and hand it back to the clerk, and it doesn't need a paying in slip to go in with it?

Barsel, our envelopes have a space for cheques and cash on the front, which they add. Plus our sort code and account number- but it takes a few days to show up. If we take them to a branch, it's immediate.

Yes, you don't need a paying in slip. They will give you the envelope, so just make sure you have your account details.

you tell the clerk you want to pay in a cheque. They get the correct envelope that's behind their counter, and when I did it (once - a long time ago) it was filled in between us at the counter. I remember vaguely that I had taken my paying in book, but actually needed my bank card which was put in their little machine. They give you a receipt. That's all I can remember.

Ok, I was hoping to know exactly what to do in case there's a queue as there is only 1 person in my local Post Office although I could leave it until Friday and go to the main one.
I just remember to take the cheque that doesn't need any info putting on the back of it, my debit card which has my account number and sort code which I then put on the envelope , put the cheque in it and hand it back to the clerk. Sorted :-)

Correct. The clerk may even fill it in for you. it's a two minute job, just make sure you keep your receipt.

there's no harm in putting your name & sort code & account number on the back of the cheque in case it gets separated from envelope/pay-in slip. They tell you to do this if sending by post.
