I am fed up of seeing begging notices on FB and other media requesting free or very cheap specific goods for a 'young mum in first home'; 'young man leaving the care system' etc.

They don't ask for a washing machine, they ask for a black washing machine. I have recently seen requests for a sleigh bed; a tv larger than 45"; a red fridge; a stainless steel microwave....

I asked the poster if the washing must be black and she said yes, because her cooker is black.

I sometimes wonder if these requests are genuine or placed by dealers hoping to make a good profit out of people's generosity.

When I started out in my first home colour matching was not my priority. In fact my appliances don't match now.

Folk may ask for what they want. If they want to reduce the chance of success that's their look out. Can't be desperate to get whatever it is ASAP.
I've never seen that on FB.
You're right, cheeky beggars.

You must have a better class of FB, Ummm. I'm in several local groups and that's where I see these requests.
Same as Ummmm, I've never seen this on FB.
It seems to be the in thing now to make money, beg off one site, sell on another.

I've made a fair bit of money buying cheap on eBay and reselling but I would never claim to be poverty stricken to get goods on the cheap or free.
That'll be it, hc, I'm not in groups.
I don't use FB myself but I believe it's quite a big place.
Sounds like something that would happen to me.
I've seen this often on Freecycle, does make me wonder how 'desperate' they are.
I saw a case a few months ago, a girl pleading to be bad off in need of a pushchair, she was given one by one kind sole, she came and collected it, sat and had tea and cake in her kitchen, and given a few more items, the next day the items were on sale on FB, the same site she had begged them from. She was exposed on FB by the giver.
There's some ruthless people about, I haven't seen it on FB but then I'm very choosy what I allow in on there, I am a member of a few groups as well
I have never seen it either. But there are local groups where things are on offer or for sale.
We are a throw away society now . A visit to our local tip with some rubbish and I had to pass a cabin where people could leave bric-a-brac. There was an upright piano, Brand new dog cages, a spotless set of crockery, large dolls house (not a mark on it), large birdcage and several ornaments just to mention a few. Why don't people give these to their local charities or shops. I don't know what actually happens to the items but I don't think they will be thrown into the rubbish skips.
They are normally local sites near were you are, that are attached to FB. most times its girls claiming to be a few weeks pregnant and no money, along with a sob story. Pulling on the heart strings:(
if I am freecycling something its because I want rid and I honestly don't care who gets it. I don't view it as me being generous, but me avoiding having to get the stuff to the tip. Having said that I don't think I have met any people who are collecting to sell but then I have never answered a wanted. My best story is the lady who asked for a pair of my late husband's bike boots which were virtually new. She told me that her husband, who is the biker, had left his in the conservatory to dry after a wet ride and the cat had peed in both of them....he was booked to go on a biking weekend that weekend and couldn't afford to just go out and buy new.
12.55 I would think he will need to change his socks more often.

I Freecycle, too, and couldn't give a hoot what happens to the goods.
My local tip is the same, I see some good stuff there. If the employees can make a few quid from them, that's fine by me.

no idea teacake but I needed a good laugh and she gave me one. Actually when I was freecycling often as I was clearing out, I met some lovely people.
Oh yes, I've seen the buy / sell local stuff, but as yet,no begging
