When typing a question, or an answer, I notice there is a number next to the 'submit' button which says XXX/4000. So does that mean we are restricted to 4000 characters when using AB

No - just continue your question in a new box.
per post, yes
I've noticed these numbers too. Anyone know what they are for?
Jem
There has always been a limit on the length of individual posts. It used to be 2000 characters but that's now been doubled. But, as Wolf indicates, there's nothing to prevent someone from continuing their flow of information within a fresh post.
You should be able to complete a post in 4000 characters, unless of course you want to do a rant.
Jem:
At one time anyone trying to submit a post of over 2000 characters would simply receive a message stating that their post was too big. Unless they realised that their post would reappear by simply clicking the 'Back' button (which many people didn't realise) that meant that they had to type it all out again.

More recently, anyone posting over 2000 characters simply had the end of their post cut off, without any warning. If people failed to check what was on the screen after they'd clicked 'Submit', that could mean that their post became meaningless because important elements of it (such as links) had been excised.

The new counter facility is there to let people know when they're getting close to the (new) 4000 character limit, so that they don't experience problems when trying to submit lengthy posts.

I was glad when the amount was put up to 4000, some of my jokes and stories went over the limit it was soo frustrating. So all is well now.
Have a look in 'Jokes' for my latest.

Jem
please refrain using any beyond 200, some of us (ok, maybe just me) lose the will to live faced with a massive wall of text.

;-)
I'm with Boo on this. On looking, most of the 'War and Peace' efforts could be about half the size if written properly.
Also, interestingly, the limit acts differently in different browsers. In IE I believe you simply go into minus numbers, whereas Chrome and FF5 actually "stop" your typing.

Maybe it isn't that interesting actually...
I agree with BOO.

At one time there was a subject at school called PRECIS....clearly not taught now.......if one cannot say what one wants to in less than 2,000 characters, then something is clerly wrong.
I also go along with B00. Well on this occasion because I really have nothing to say which would involve the use of 200 characters.

So apart from the fact that dropping down two lines only uses up two characters. That's it.

However, this posting has now developed into one of 355 characters. Check it someone and start a quarrel with me.:-)

Ron. ☺☺☺
Ron I counted 284.
Ron (the other one)
Try counting again Ron...(not me the other one.)

If my figure of 355 is wrong, then AB needs a new 'character counter'

For info, I typed out the whole of my posting and, having left a space for three digits, inserted the total prior to hitting the 'submit button'.

Every space counts as a character and each blank line amounts to a single So this present posting has a total of 431 characters.

Ron.....the barefaced one. :-)☺
In a few more genertions to cime this will not be problem as it seems that all youngsters are growing up able only to type in "text speke" ie.
I C U R
I C U B
I C U R
2 Y's 4 ME.
Yes, that is correct. We are all limited to 4,000 per post, and that includes spaces and all punctuation. We shall have to come straight to the point, no more War and Peace length posts here any more.
.Just to say I'm agreeing with Boo too. If I see a big post, to be honest I decide in the first few lines whether to continue reading, and at times I don't
Squad has the idea. "Clerly wrong". Just skip a few letters here than there and you can fit in extra words before hitting the limit.

Probably why some don't bother with paragraph breaks too.
2000 characters in a single paragraph will amount to using up the space taken by this posting......................................
