A. Thanks to djtaz11398 for this question recently to see Sensei's answer click here. Basically, it depends how good YOUR diet is! Stick to fresh food where possible when feeding your dog, also making sure that you provide a varied and balanced diet of meat, fruit and vegetables.

Q. Is meat important for my dog

A. Yes, it supplies a dog with protein, fat and minerals. Meat protein is more easily digested than that found in vegetables. But remember to keep things balanced, a diet consisting of just meat would deprive your dog of many essential nutrients and would provide him with too mush protein.

Q. Should I feed my dog vegetables

A. Yes, vegetables supply dogs with the majority of its vitamin requirements, as well as essential fatty acids and fibre. But crush them first: vegetables have a cellulose skin covering which needs to be broken in order for your dog to be able to digest them properly.

Q. Can I feed my dog fruit

A. Yes. Fruits main nutrient is carbohydrate and they also contain vitamins, enzymes and minerals.

Q. Can I feed my dog cereals

A. Because dogs naturally would eat very little cereals in the wild, they're less important than meat and vegetables and are probably best avoided.

Q. Can I feed my dog bread

A. This should also be avoided. Bread lacks any significant vitamins and as it's high in carbohydrates and starch it could cause diseases like diabetes if fed in large quantities.

Q. Can I feed my dog cheese

A. Again one to be avoided, dogs have problems digesting cheese proteins, fats and minerals, leading to diarrhoea and vomiting as well as possible long-term health problems.

Q. Can I feed my dog treats

A. As long as they're low fat ones, such as low fat dog biscuits and raw fruits and vegetables. Steer clear of feeding your dog table scraps as they’re usually loaded with calories.
