small creature spotted on motorway hard shoulder

Driving along the M4 on Saturday, I spotted a small creature, about the size of a cat, but with shorter legs. No tail visible. It was brown with black mottling (brindle I think they call this) Anyone have any idea what this might have been?

Definitely not a Capybara. Possibly was a young badger. Thanks everyone.
