I like to feed the small birds in my garden but recently I have been inundated with large crows who steal everything in sight. Any ideas how to keep them away and let the little ones feed?

They need to eat as well Maisie. I'm afraid that is nature and not to be interfered with if we wan't to keep the balance correct. We have to de-personalise the birds. They are all birds whether they are little pretty ones and big ugly ones. They all have the same needs.
put some small cheap dog biscuits somewhere away from the main feeding area....they love them

you are feeding the birds so i am afraid the crows are birds, i had the same problem with someones racing pigeons.
At least you have birds who visit you - lot of cats around here so they avoid our lawn. Cats are simply the scourge of birds and remember they have been bred to be domesticated and not part of the natural balance. We'd ban them. As for your crows I guess they deserve to eat too!
More birds are killed by road traffic than by cats. Should we ban cars!

Thanks everyone - some very helpful suggestions especially the feeder which deters predators. I must remember that crows are birds too!

Thanks everyone. I'll probably get a different feeder now. Some very helpful suggestions.
Hi Maisie, I posted a thread the other day asking just the opposite to yours:

I love to feed 'all' the birds who fly into our garden, no matter what species. They all need to eat, the same as every other creature.

We have a Victorian metal bird food stand in our back garden & I like nothing more than to watch the bigger birds popping in to feed from it, whilst the little ones are feeding undisturbed from the smaller containers hanging in the trees.

Enjoy! ;o}

P.S. We've always had a cat & yes, we've had the occasional bird brought in, which has infuriated & upset me - but again that's nature for you!
