I can't save the world, but I could save that one couple.

You pay up for one - the pirates just kidnap more. It is a very difficult decision, and they were in that position due to one change of mind and bad luck. Even so...

I'd spare a few hundred grand to pay for a crack SAS team to go in, rescue the couple and blast the kidnappers to oblivion.

If a ransom is paid, it will encourage even more kidnapping.

I think they ignored FO advice and sailed into dangerous pirate-infested waters. I believe that sum of money would do more good in Haiti or somewhere similar.

Paying the ransom out of your winnings would encourage more episodes of kidnapping.

To sail into known pirate-infested seas as just a lone couple is madness. It is well known in sailing circles that in areas like that, you sail as a convoy or a group.

Before the earthquake, the UN estimated that 24m Haitians did not have enough food, and what did they do?

I think the expression is "jack sh!t"

It's a shame that they needed an earthquake in order to get the world to feed them.
