The fact is that the law should be applied fairly and without prejudice. It can't and shouldn't be meted out just because of a defendant's profession.
Would you feel the same had it been your brother, son, cousin etc? This guy did wrong, that's irrefutable, but would you imagine for a second that he had planned to do it? This most certainly appears to have been a tragic accident and I'm sure he has spent every second since then regretting bitterly what his stupidity resulted in.
Not only will this guy be prosecuted, rightly, but his career will also now be in tatters. That is certainly not a thing you could say about every stupid person who does similar things. They may get prosecuted and that would be the end of it.
And when you think that a Police Officer is allowed to serve at least 30 years, he'll have a long time left probably to reflect on what he did.

Paraffin..try reading my previous answer to you.I have already stated that his profession has nothing to do with my opinion.You have a seriously large chip on your shoulder there!
And to answer your question,yes I would feel the same if it were a member of my family that had done this.There is no excuse for being so stupid and careless.
Just to make an extra point here.........I'm ot even particularly a dog lover (much prefer cats) but animals should be cared for properly,if you can't guarantee that you can do that then don't own an animal!

I'll be interested to find out what happened. Did he leave the dogs in the vehicle then get bogged down with paperwork and not think how hot it was? I just can't imagine what was on his mind that he didn't think about them, police dog handlers usually really love their dogs and would never knowingly endanger them. Poor things.

Put it this way, I've known and dealt with many prolific criminals in my time, I'm talking about thieves, burglars, robbers etc, and I've never known any of them to receive the maximum sentence when convicted. Had that been done, most of them would never see the light of day again. Instead, the vast majority are at large in our communities.
And only you know the truthfulness of your alleged indifference were he a relative of yours.

If you have ever noticed any post of mine when family is mentioned you will have seen that I can't abide most of my family (mother,3 brothers and 3 sisters).I am the only one out of all of us that has no criminal record.......a fact that I am very proud of! So I would happily see any of my family members incarcerated for the same crime as this man.
If any of my children committed this act of stupidity I would also hope they were brought to task by the law over it...hopefully I have taught them better than that though and they wouldn't be so careless.

Possibly we should wait for the results of the prosecution and the effect on this man's career. Of course we are all furious and also about the 8 other known cases that day.
If it turns out to be a whitewash then the police do not deserve the respect they expect, especially as I have been at "the wrong end" of these animals on a student demo.

If he remains in the police force I wonder what his reaction will be in future if he is called to a dog left in a car in hot weather? Will he seek to prosecute the owner?

I personally know Police Officers who have been prosecuted, and convicted for various offences and the fact that their occupation was what it was never came into it, and rightly so. Some have lost their jobs as a result.
But all this hysteria on here about "what chances of a copper being done" / "whitewash" / "probably suspended on full pay" / "if he just killed a human protester, he'd get off without charge" / "he cannot expect to be treated as "just any other person"."

He has committed the offence of "unnecessary suffering" which, technically, could see him jailed for 6 months and/or max fine of �20,000.
But does he deserve prison? I think not. Fined? Yes, because that, combined with his wrecked career would be punishment enough.
