Is it a choking noise or a wretching cough, if the latter, could be kennel cough?

Coughing can be the sign of any number of things, if you are unsure get the vet to check him over.

If it is a choking noise you need to be aware of mega oesophagus. Rare condition not seen my many vets. Good luck
