High there, i want to create a ramp down into my pond so that small animals or birds can drink the pond water without fear of falling in, it'll also allow frogs to get in and out easily.. If i just lay some large branches into the pond, with the exposed end resting on the bank / edge, what would the best type of wood be to do this, oak, ash, beech etc etc,,,,,,,??

Thanks, bererunner

Don't think the type of wood matters so much but what about a chicken wire covered ramp to allow hedgehogs to get out. Even a piece of chicken wire dangling into the pond will help. Hedgehogs like a swim.

branches will sour the water. I have house bricks from bottom to top laid like steps.
I agree don't use branches. We have steps in ours, so any little animal get out if need be.You will see some smashing wildlife once the creatures get used to the alterations.
