Any help appreciated here. My little dog's fur is shedding everywhere - I do hoover every single day but he is sitting beside me and I can actually gently pull his hair out. I have already cut him myself but he does need a good shave with the groomer - however I feel it is still too cold for him. Anybody tell me how to get rid of excess fur. Brushing does not not seem to do the trick. Or is there a great brush out there - at the moment I have a week fine wire brush.

Hi, Connemmara:

Just wondering if this is a permanent problem with the little fella? I take it you've consulted the vet or whoever in case it's some kind of skin disease etc?

Have you tried a shedding comb? It's a sort of metal toothed comb which can be bought at pets shops, supermarkets etc

Good Luck.

No he is very normal. Anyway as I said I cut him down myself a few weeks ago and found that he was constantly scratching his back on my carpet. I showered him yesterday after a day at the park and I could not believe how much fur was stuck in the plug hole. So what has happened dead hair was lying in him. I will just wait until weather changes and get him properly groomed. I do have that fine metal thing it is not too bad but not great. Thanks for your answer
connamara - what breed is your dog? sounds a bit like he is just shedding his coat which is perfectly normal - there is a difference between cutting his coat and grooming it - the former shortens the coat whereas the latter takes out all the dead and shedding hair. dogs need to be groomed on a regular basis to keep their coats in good condition. of course he may have a skin condition like fleas etc but if the coat is just coming out regularly all over his body, maybe he just wants a good groom.
My dogs are shedding like crazy at the moment and I brush them everyday to get rid of very looses hairs and also every couple of days with a rubber 'hound glove' which gives a gentle pull to anything waiting to come out. It helps, but I think really it's just the time of year and theyre quitting their wnter coats.
best dog brush I have ever used is a thing called a furminator....not cheap but well worth it

wolfgang - where can I buy it - I am just after phoning Pets at Home and they shops dont sell it you have to buy it online.
Try Ebay for the furminator. I got one for my cat. Here is a link:

My mum used to vacuum our dog when we were young. He was a big dog though - your little dog would be at risk of being sucked up.

Just bought a Furminator from ebay-thanks to those that suggested it. It's brilliant, we have 3 cats and a JRT and it worked well on all of them
