I adopted my cat (she's 9 yr old) in Oct last year and love her to bits. A couple months ago she started to claw at the carpet at the top of my stairs, the exact same spot each time. She has a large scratch mat (similar to a coil mat) which she does use nearly every time she walks passed it. But she still likes to scratch my carpet which I fear it going to start fraying if she continues to do so. Is there any substance which I can use on my carpet which will deter her from scratching thre and obviously must be harmless to animals too. Thanks for any advice.

I have 7 cats, and last year had new carpets through out, I had this problem on the last step on the stairs, I was told about catnip sachets but was very sceptical, as if that would work!!, Well you have never seen anything so funny in all your life, they all got the love bug for it and it is a bit messy until the cats got the idea, rub it up and down the scratch post or activity center, I am still amased it was instant, The kitten who was the worst for scratching the carpet even goes down stairs now to use the center, i would suggest putting the post where she scratches the carpet, to encourage her but try not to get it on the carpet, hope it helps
Hi MustangLady, I've had the same problem with one of my cats. I moved the cat scratcher to where she was scratching but she just found another spot. I've bought some Shaws Repel-All from Wilsons which seems to be doing the trick. Perhaps that, combined with the catnip sachets suggested by Josaphine would be worth a try.
