Must be painful bj. I should have said what birds are you getting?
One container of black sunflower seeds and one of nyjer seeds in another

http://shopping.rspb.org.uk/c/Birdfood.htm?Aff iliateCode=T07ITH0044&_$ja=kw:bird+feeder+feed |cgn:Feeder+Mix|cgid:372432328|tsid:6652|cn:Bi rd+Feed|cid:16570768|lid:3150970108|mt:Broad|n w:search|crid:669184108

Plus apples and peanuts, though less regularly

We counted 18 goldfinches around the nyjer seed container a couple of days ago. Its like avian Spaghetti junction lol
ha ha carrust
also-have bird seed mix and peanuts(these arent too popular)
Starlings, tree sparrows, dunnocks, blackbirds, robins, greenfinch, blue tits, cole tits, great tits, marsh tit, gold grest collared doves, wood pigeons, woodpecker, partridges, pheasants and unfortunately, rats!!

We are spending a small fortune on bird feed, rat bait an rat traps
gold grest!!!!
I forgot the wrens, but I haven't seen them for a few days :o(
Next doors cat.
Seriously folks, its great to see you are all keeping us poor bird food sales people in jobs!

Our biggest seller at the moment is sunflower hearts (no messy husks on the ground) - peanuts have gone down in sales as the price has gone up. Black sunflowers are the best value. Don't the goldfinches fight over the niger?
The goldfinches don't need to fight over the nyger seeds, Lankeela, they spread so much onto the lawn that there is plenty for all

We alo get a pair of Nuthatches on the black sunflower seeds . Again they are very adept at spreading the seeds far and wide

We were thinking of getting some feeds for the blackbirds and thrushes, any suggestions welcomed

lofty. That's a very impressive list, esp tree sparrow. I too get gold finches, bull finches & the occasional sparrow hawk. As a bonus, I got a peregrine last week chasing a wood pigeon over my garden.
Lankeela. I also feed only with sun flower hearts...a bit more expensive than the black ones, but no mess.
i used to get about 100 starlings in my garden at a time then a sparrow hawk used my fence as a perch for about an hour and havent had a bird in the garden since so i've stopped putting food out
I often think we have all the tree sparrows in Norfolk, Carrust, in our garden. I planted some natural british honeysuckle in the hedge line about 10 years ago and it's completely taken over. It's a haven for tree sparrows - and the noisiest hedge ever!!

I forgot to add the sparrowhawk in my list - I suppose he benefits from the bird table just as much, but in a different way! (He's welcome though)
I have never had a bull finch in the 30 years I have lived here.
before i had the visit from mr sparrow hawk i used to get a pair of mating siskins in my garden which is really rare for my area

my parents get red kites feeding in their garden
Question Author
Tree sparrows are a recordable species in my area (S Yorks) One of the rarest species in my garden are starlings, would you believe, & we've also got an invasion of waxwings in the city centre.
i hate starlings, the lawn in my garden turned black when they descended and its not a small lawn plus they used to chase off the other birds
Starlings are generally on the decline. I can't honestly say I hate them. They demolish the fat balls at a fast rate and are such funny, amusing little birds.

I'll send some tree sparrows up to you Carrust.

I forgot to put the abundant chaffinches on my list!!!

danchip. Starlings do a lot of good around the garden. They loads of harmful larvae, including leather-jackets..which eat plant roots.
they demolish everything in the process
