The hamster got out of his rotastak during the night (I always thought those tubes didn't fit together that well) and we have looked all day under and behind every piece of furniture downstairs with no luck. Now I'm getting worried, it's like he's vanished. Anybody had this experience with a happy ending? How long could he live hidden in the house. We've sort of looked upstairs in desperation but would he have climbed the stairs?

It's happened to me a few times ! It will have made a nest inside the settee........ours did !! Leave some food out and then capture it with a box or a net or something. I just hope you haven't got cats or it may not have a happy ending !

He will go to seek safety and a warm bed, somethign he can chew and get some fluff from more than likely like under a sofa.

Some strong smelling food is better like cheese to attract him out. Their eyesight is appalling so you need to appeal to their sense of smell.

Would he have been shut in a certain room? Leave some water by it as well so at least if you don't get him he has access to some.

Maybe put a little bed by it so see if he will climb in for a sleep somewhere warm, put some of his own bedding in so it has his smell. They're not the brightest of little things bless em :)

They are actually pretty good little climbers when they get going as they hang on to the fibres with their claws.

Don't discount tiny spaces as they are unbelievably squeezy and can get through the tiniest spaces.

I've had a couple of mine escape. One was found under the sofa having chewed himself a nice nest from it (mum was not impressed!).

Had another couple escape but never not found them though they were quite sociable and would come out.

Lol@jayne !
Hi there Prudie , don't give up hope love , little fellow may turn up any time . Several times try to be very quiet and listen if you can hear little scuffles and squeaks so that you can locate him. One of my hamsters some years ago , Tilly Houdini , escaped and got into the space between inner and exterior walls in the kitchen . I put down fresh food every day and water and , after 3 days he found his way out and to the food and water , a bit worse for wear but unharmed . All the best xxx
keep food in the cage so hammy has to return to eat. He'll soon return & snuggle down in familiar sett.

Just for an update, left food out in lounge overnight and eaten by this morning. Tonight gonna put some in each room and shut the doors to establish which room he may be in. Joggerjayne you're nearly right but we call 'noodles,noodles,noodles...
Try getting a bucket and leaving some of his food and bedding inside it. Build a little ramp up to it so he can climb in. The short fall won't hurt him and he won't be able to get out again if he goes in there.

Good luck.

Just to thank you all for your replies and tell you the good news, this morning at 6 drinking my tea in bed I heard a noise and put the light on and there he was right by my bedside table. Bless! I picked him up and returned him to his cage, I'm expecting him to be depressed for a few days!
get a big padlock for his cage.

good news, I'm pleased you found him :o)

and yes, it seems they can climb the stairs!!!
Awww bless him! So glad he's back safe and sound :)
So pleased. What a relief !
I was thinking about the escapee this morning. I am glad that he is back in his little house.

I know that it was all exciting for him - off in search of other hamsters to play with - especially lady ones. But they are so tiny that the world is, I would imagine, quite dangerous for them.

If only he could tell you where he had been and what he had seen on his adventures. :-)
i lost my hamster once and found him in the cage with the guinea pig.....the guinea pig was terrified......do you have a guinea pig? because he might be shacking up with the guinea pig?? im sure he will turn up......my cousins hamster somehow got into the loft and chewed its way through her light fitting in her bedroom.
Didn't you read the above answers hollie ???
HE'S BACK lol !!!
