To be absolutely safe, keep her away from other dogs for four weeks from when she started bleeding to be sure she doesnt attract unwanted male attention.
and you could read the response I got from lankeela about my bitch coming on heat - I posted it under 'pets'
She is 'ready to breed' as you put it when she is mature enough, you have had all the necessary health checks done, you have studied her pedigree carefully and found her a suitable mate whose pedigree ties in with hers and when you have enough suitable homes for puppies, when she is in demand as a brood bitch because of her type, temperament and breed. Only when all this and more is complete will she be 'ready to breed'. As for you, you are obviously not ready 'to be a breeder' if you don't even know the basics of a bitches ovulation cycle. Breeding dogs is not something you can learn from asking one question about a bitches physical condition.

right again!

lankeela, you're judgemental answer was of no help, thanks.
1. Im not a breeder, I dont need to know the inner details of gestation and the rest.
2. I don't want to breed with my dog. I want to make sure no other dog comes near her during this time.
3. Many dog owners have different answers to exactly when is the "dangerous" period. Some say after the bleeding, some say 5 days after the bleeding has started etc.

This is what I wanted to get clarity on - not a "ms Goodhal" lesson on whether I should breed or not.
