Kitten gone loopy!

Hi

My kitten is about 4 and a half months old. Lately he's started running round the house at high speed ie up the stairs round the bedroom, back down, up the sofa, back down the sofa, a lap of the lounge and then round the kitchen - he meows while he does this. Does anyone elses' kitten do this - should I be concerned? He does it at such whirlwind speed and the meowing worries me a bit - he seems to do it a lot more lately!
Incidentally he's been to the vets in the last week for his second jabs so I would assume she would have picked up if there was anything obviously wrong with him!
TIA

The bad news is that he is completely normal. He is a perfectly normal and healthy little kitten - enjoy!

Even when cats become adults some are still prone to little mad turns like rushing around the house yelling at the top of their voice.
And dogs too!

My dog, almost everyday, has a mental 10 minutes where she'll run round the house like a super charged rocket. Round the livingroom, up the stairs, thunder round my bedroom, back downstairs and rince and repeat.

Drives me nuts.
This is absolutely normal behaviour and can continue well past kittenhood - in fact all their life whilst they are fit and active. Most cats have 'mad sessions' at least once a day. It gets rid of all their pent up energy. My cat (aged 7) includes skidding across the floor on our rug whilst meowing loudly as part of her 'mad session' routine.
She also has a mad session after using her cat litter for a 'poo' - don't ask me why.

Don't worry about it at all, just enjoy watching him.
Ha ha, BOO, my JR does this too!!
Mines a JR too Lottie!!

Mental aren't they?
Yep, but very lovely with it and so intelligent BOO.
My kitten is 10 weeks old and does the same thing - as wolf says this is perfectly normal - i'm surprised he has not done it before. It may be worth checking for ear mites or fleas, just in case there is something bothering him.

My previous cat used to take itself upstairs to rear around and you could hear it thundering about and then would come down and look at you as if to say "what are you looking at - it wasn't me"!

It's amazing the speed that they can get up to - our lucy has been re-named "Usain Bolt" by the kids.
I wonder if all animals do it. I have often seen a field full of cows or horses suddenly all running around and jumping madly for a good few minutes, for no apparent reason. We just say 'they have the wind up their tails'!!
I would be more worried if the kitten was woofing while running round !

Thanks guys - was just a bit worried - my first kitten! He has always been a bit mental but it was just the new addition of meowing that was worrying me! He has now COMPLETELY shredded my net curtains (well voiles but same as!) that cover my patio doors - they are floor to ceiling ribbons now and he has taken to launching himself off the back of the sofa to see if he can cling on to the top of them - he can't - he just hits the glass and slides to the floor on his tummy - he doesn't seem at all perturbed by this!
I think my main concern is that he's getting frustrated (he doesn't go outside) but it sounds like everyone else's kitten is just as mental! x
Give him loads of things to play with - cardboard boxes are a favourite, and paper and bits of string, ping pong balls - in fact anything he can pounce on. If you are intending to let him out I would wait for at least another couple of months - probably longer. Kittens, being kittens, are much more likely to get killed on the road than adult cats.

I am afraid voiles and net curtains are just disasters waiting to happen, wonderful to climb up and hang on.

He's just fine and perfectly normal.
Its the fact that she is shredding the back of my legs that I am most concerned with at the minute!

Do you lift the blinds etc so that your kitten can see outside - they love to watch everything that is going on - a tennish ball would also be good for him just now. My kitten also has a tou stuffed kitten that she likes to wrestle with and just generally beat up!
My 2 still do this and they're both just over a year old and still run around the place like posessed kitties chasing each other!

I've been told it's normal and nothing to worry about so enjoy!

Cats love embossed wall paper as well. Mine used to climb up ours in the hall way.
My mum used to call this the Rips. Our dog and cat used to spend about 10 minutes a day doing it.
murphy's 8ish and she still does this and rips the wallpaper off
That;s hilarious Miss-taken.. how lovely!!! Yes I am afraid everyone here is right.. its normal.. and 7 years on my Pickle Pants still has a mad moment or two! He charges past me like a whirlwind in the garden... and then charges halfway up a tree and stops... just hangs then.. til he remembers he actually doesn't like climbing trees!!!

very funny.. enjoy the moments of madness... make you chuckle after a hard day at work!!!
Just burning off excess energy.....let it out to quieten it down.
Mine comes in from outside and still has her mad time indoors. Doesn't make any difference at all! The kitten is too young to be let out anyway. They need to be a bit more street wise and sensible before they go out into the big wide world.
My cat is 14 years old and still has mad days,he also leaps in the air,he came flying through the air from the kitchen the other day,and landed right on top of a floor plant and knocked it flying, his face was a picture when he looked at what he'd done ,at least it slowed him down a bit after that, just enjoy him.
All cats go scat at some stage. It is so funny to watch. They just playing
