Can anyone tell me if this is the sort of wage you can earn for doing this job? Apparently someone I know is earning 200 a day for laying cables in the road and if he works weekends gets 150 for each morning! He is unqualified and unskilled as well! I find it hard to believe and wonder if it is true whether the job is likely to be secure. Does anyone know?

When you say, "laying cables in the road", I presume you mean laying cables in a trench that has been dug in the road... thus working in an excavation which might collapse unless properly shored up and if a deep excavation there might be noxious gases (which could be fatal).... and don't even mention the risks from vehicles and machinery passing close by ..... so - it's not like sitting at a computer or filing pieces of paper, it's actually a fairly risky occupation. I know there are lots of safeguards (I have to ensure them as part of my job) but it is still a hazardous occupation and they should be well paid. I have no idea whether 200/day is realistic though. I would expect weekend work to be paid at a higher rate, given they are giving up their Saturday morning (so that the disruption to the week day road users is minimised),
